Admitted as a freeman in Newport, RI in 1655.

Baptised as a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport on 16November 1652 and represented the church in its struggle against thepersecution of dissenters from the established church in Massachusetts.He and Tobias Saunders were arrested in 1662 and sentenced to two yearsin a Boston jail but were eventually released in a prisoner exchange. Hewas among the earliest settlers of the western section of Rhode Island.He was listed as a member of the Newport Seventh Day Baptist Church inits 1692 record.
