William Wilson was born in 1801 in the "Emerald Isle", on the banks ofLoch Erin in Ballyshannon. He immigrated to Canada in 1824. On November7, 1832, at the age of 31, he married Mary Bull, daughter of JosiahBull. Together they had six sons and two daughters: Josiah; Alexander;Richard; Hiram; John D.; Thomas C.; Sarah and Mary Ann.
William was one of the first settlers at Irvine Gore. He securedsome land here in 1833, where he built a log shanty, which he and hisfamily lived for five years. Clearing the land, he cultivated it andsowed wheat. Having no gun to frighten away the deer coming to pasture,he would go into the field and throw stones at them.
When he built his house, all the lumber had to be planed by hand,as there was no factory to do the work. They made all the panel doors, window frames and sashes, as well as the pine timber eavestroughs.
