I prepared a booklet "House of Dayton International" after a number ofyears of research. My data indicates that Ralph was an interpreter to theIndians on Long Island and married "Medlen" a full blooded Montauk Indianwho was born in 1624. They were married on Sept. 12, 1654 in Southampton,Long Island. Medlen was also called Wilhelmina, possibly a christian namebestowed on her by the Dutch settlers who were dominant in the area. Theyhad about eight children. Shortly after the last child was born, she wasno longer referred to and possibly died. Samuel then married the secondwife. I have some further information.

According to the Morman Church records, Medlen born in 1624, and Samuelwere married
on Sept 12, 1654 in what is now Southampton, Long Island. There are a fewreferences to Medlen. One that Samuel was once fined in a local courtbecause his wife Medlen "defamed another local women. In those days for awhite settler to marry an Indian was looked down on and Medlen probablyhad a rough time. There is another reference to her deeding some land tothe County (possible tribal land?) There is no indication of when shedied but it was probably shortly before Samuel married his second wife, possibly in childbirth. The Montauk tribe was in dire circumstances atthe time and looked to the english settlers at Southampton forprotection.
